When I was a teenager in the 1990s, peak summer meant going to a concert. Now at 45, I’m planning my Karol G concert outfit—and apparently concert fashion has changed a lot since the days when I’d throw on something cute, buy a concert T-shirt and call it good.
This summer, my best friend and I are heading to Seattle to see Karol G, so I’ve been searching for Karol G concert outfit ideas that feel fun, colorful and sexy without making me feel like I’m trying to dress like I’m 22 again.
And let me tell you: finding that balance has been an adventure.
Things have changed.
Obviously, as I got older, concerts became less frequent. There were bills to pay, work, marriage, motherhood and approximately 900 other things competing for the entertainment budget.
But there was one concert this summer I was determined not to miss:
I am a BIG Karol G fan, and when my best friend and I decided to go see her in Seattle, the outfit planning started almost immediately.
Because apparently we don’t simply attend concerts anymore.
We need an aesthetic.
And I’m not mad about it.
Dressing for the Karol G Vibe
With the Tropicoqueta era bringing all of those gorgeous warm tropical colors, I immediately started looking at orange.
Orange dresses. Orange tops. Orange everything.
I was open to other colors and styles, but I really wanted something that felt fun, summery and worthy of a Karol G concert.
There was just one minor problem.
I am a 45-year-old mom shopping for a concert outfit on the internet.
Do you know what apparently happens to clothing once the word “concert” is added to the search bar?
It disappears.
Suddenly every shirt is four inches long, every dress ends somewhere around your hip bones, and there are cutouts in places I didn’t even realize we were cutting out now.
Ma’am.
I want to see Karol G.
I am not trying to become Karol G.
There are parts of me that used to sit considerably higher in the 1990s, and I would prefer that they remain inside my clothing for the duration of the evening.
The goal was simple:
Cute. Sexy. Fun. But still me.
The Orange Dress I Chose
After scrolling through what felt like every orange article of clothing on Amazon, I finally settled on a cute orange dress with cutouts.
The color was exactly what I wanted, and the cutouts gave it a little sexiness without making me feel like I was trying too hard.
It is shorter than what I normally wear.
I’m usually much happier with a dress that hits around or below my knees because I’m not particularly confident about my legs. But I also decided this was one of those occasions where I could get outside my comfort zone a little.
It’s one night.
It’s Karol G.
We’re showing some leg.
And honestly? That’s part of what makes getting dressed for something like this fun.
The Rhinestone Boots Are Coming Out
Then there were the shoes.
I already own a pair of rhinestone boots, and normally I’d worry that they lean a little too country for this outfit.
But once I put everything together, I changed my mind.
The sparkle works.
They’re fun, they’re comfortable, and—possibly most importantly—they’re closed-toe.
I don’t know when exactly I became the woman who considers toe safety while planning a concert outfit, but here we are.
I’ve had enough people step on my feet at crowded events to know that cute shoes aren’t worth sacrificing a toenail.
The rhinestone boots are coming.
And Obviously, We Need Accessories
This is where I plan to have some fun.
I’m adding big gold hoops, a cute necklace and a big flower in my hair.
And then we’re taking things up another notch with the makeup.
I bought glitter freckles, because apparently this is who I am now, and I’m planning a bright orange eye with gold or bronze shimmer.
My everyday makeup is usually much more wearable and neutral, so I’m looking forward to having an excuse to do something completely different.
If there were ever a night for orange eyeshadow and glitter freckles, surely a Karol G concert is it.
The Clear-Bag Situation
Of course, we also have to talk about the least glamorous part of modern concert dressing:
Our venue in Seattle only allows certain clear bags, so I already have one ready to go.
I’m still debating whether I even want to carry it, though.
I may just use a phone lanyard instead.
Between Apple Pay and my phone holding basically my entire life, I don’t necessarily need to bring much with me.
And the older I get, the more appealing not carrying a purse around for six hours becomes.
Phone. ID. Lip product.
What else do I really need?
A Few Other Summer Concert Outfit Ideas
While I was searching for my outfit, I found several other pieces that would be really cute for a summer concert or festival.
And they definitely don’t have to be specifically for Karol G.
Think:
- A bright maxi or midi dress with fun accessories
- Wide-leg pants with a fitted or cropped top
- A colorful matching set
- Denim shorts with a statement top and boots
- A flowy skirt with a fitted tank
- A simple dress dressed up with bold jewelry, fun makeup and great shoes
My best friend has been searching SHEIN for her outfit, too, so we’ve basically turned this into an entire event before the actual event even happens.
Which is half the fun.
Concert Style at 45 Looks a Little Different—and I Like It
The funny thing is that I’m probably putting more thought into this concert outfit at 45 than I ever did at 17.
But I also know myself better now.
I know what I’m comfortable wearing. I know which shoes I’m willing to stand in for hours. I know I want to look sexy without spending the entire night tugging my dress back into place.
And I’m much less interested in wearing something just because it’s trendy.
I want to look in the mirror and think:
Yep. That’s me. Just with considerably more glitter.
Now I Just Need the Concert to Get Here
Karol G’s new music has already been on repeat in my office, and now I’m basically counting down until my best friend and I head to Seattle.
The rhinestone boots are ready.
The giant gold hoops are happening.
The glitter freckles have been acquired.
At this point, all that’s left is the concert.
And after spending my teenage summers going to concerts in the ’90s, there’s something really fun about getting excited about one all over again—just this time with a better outfit, Apple Pay, and a much stronger appreciation for comfortable shoes.
I cannot wait.
